The Origin of Ohm Chants

The idea for Ohm Chants began long before the app existed. Whenever Suzanne taught mantra, students would often ask if they could have a recording so they could continue practicing at home. Back in the day, she would simply record the chants on a small USB recorder, plug it into her computer, and email the files to them.

 

As smartphones became common, Suzanne began recording chants directly on her phone so students could listen and practice more easily.

 

Over time, these recordings grew into a large collection of mantras that students were using in their daily practice. When the OHM Center opened and many more people began asking to learn these chants, it became clear that there should be a simpler way for people to access them. Ohm Chants grew naturally from that need; it was a way to make these practices easily available for people to return to them whenever they wanted.

 

Originally called 'The Mantra App', after 1.5 years of work on it, progress stalled. Then one day, Vidhi walked into the Ohm Center and when Suzanne found out she was a coder who also loved to chant, she asked, "Want to work on a mantra app?" to which Vidhi replied, "I'd love to!" Suzanne said, "I'm not kidding!" Vidhi said, "Neither am I!" And so the collaboration was born and the project was re-ignited. One-and-a-half years later, we present this app to you!

Sometimes we know we need something to help settle ourselves, but we’re not sure exactly what practice would help most in that moment. Our Ohm Chants app includes a simple 3-step emotional check-in to guide you. By identifying how you’re feeling, the app can suggest a practice (a combination of chanting, breathwork, meditation, or sound healing) that can help bring you back into balance. We try to take away any stress you may feel from having to come up with your own practice. Many people find that simply naming how they feel is the first step toward settling the mind and returning to themselves.

WHAT ELSE DOES THE APP OFFER?

Breathwork - Mantra - Meditation: The Trifecta of Inner Peace

Mantra chanting is the centerpiece of this practice. Through years of teaching mantra to many students, Suzanne observed that chanting was the quickest and most reliable way to help people clear their minds and enter meditation. Other methods can certainly help, but nothing she encountered worked as consistently with students as chanting aloud. Breathwork helps prepare the body and nervous system so the chanting can deepen more easily. Then, when the chanting ends, meditation often arises naturally, because the mind has already settled. In this way, breathwork, mantra, and meditation work together as a simple and powerful sequence, gradually bringing the mind into calmness and a deeper sense of inner contentment.

 

We also have bits of learning interspersed here and there, what we call "wisdom bites" and soothing sound healing that you can listen to before bed or as needed.

WHAT IF I'VE NEVER CHANTED BEFORE?

Many people using Ohm Chants are completely new to chanting, and that’s perfectly fine. The app includes optional step-by-step guidance to help you learn the mantras at your own pace. You can listen, repeat, and gradually become familiar with the sounds and rhythm of the chant. There’s no need to get everything perfect; simply following along and letting the sound carry your attention is enough for the practice to begin working. Before long, many people find the chant naturally staying with them...quietly repeating in the mind while walking, cooking, or going about their day.

HOW LONG SHOULD I PRACTICE?

You definitely do not need long periods of time for these practices to notice improvements in your well-being. Even a few minutes of chanting, breathwork, or quiet listening can help settle the mind and bring the nervous system back into balance.
